July 30 2016 - Visiting Porto

09:00 Departure from Guimarães for a visit to Porto, the "Cidade Invicta" (unvanquished city). Porto is history, culture, gastronomy, trade, encounters and discoveries.
Famous architects with buildings in the city include Alvaro Siza and Rem Koolaas/OMA (Casa da Música). Other key architects with work in Porto include dEMM arquitectura, AVA - Atelier Veloso Arquitectos, Regino Cruz and Pedra Silva architects.

We will start our visit to Casa da Música. Casa da Música is visually and spatially defined by its striking faceted exterior from which its conventional interior spaces have been extracted. The buildings 400mm thick faceted shell and the two 1m thick walls of the main auditorium are the buildings primary load carrying and stability system. The auditorium walls act as internal diaphragms tieing the shell together in the longitudinal direction. Arup and OMA researched the concrete mix for external façades.

The Tour will pass next to Oporto Vodafone Building. Structurally, the building is based on full concrete solution, with solid slabs supported on walls, cores, and some columns. The shell structure of white concrete self-compacted on the north and south elevations, which grows in the perimeter of the building in multiple panels, was performed entirely is situ, using marine plywood formwork. Design concept: evoke Vodafone brand – “Vodafone Life, Life in Motion” by Barbosa & Guimarães project.
Next stop Casa Serralves, art in a striking minimalist building by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Alvaro Siza Vieira. Like the Guggenheim, there is no collection permanently on display, with temporary exhibitions taking up the entire space, as well as that of the separate "Casa de Serralves," a pink Art Deco construction located in the surrounding formal gardens (which are magnificent and worth a visit in their own right).

The eighteen hectares of grounds also contain natural farmland, and are dotted with modern sculptures (including a much-photographed gigantic shovel by Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen). Major exhibitions in the past have included "Andy Warhol: A Factory," "Francis Bacon: Caged - Uncaged," and "Paula Rego." This is a sight that should not be missed when visiting Porto, and be sure to also pass by the museum shop for some of the best of Portuguese design.
Lunch at Serralves Restaurant. On the afternoon the Tour proceeds to Porto City Center, with its photogenic traditional boats floating at the quayside overlooked by colorful ancient houses, this is the most picturesque spot in the city and the place everyone loves - UNESCO did too, and declared it a World Heritage Site. Participants will take the opportunity to make a Douro River Cruise followed by a visit an wine tast on a Port Wine Cellars.

Price per person for a minimum of 20 participants: € 105,00
